A Universities Institutional Review Board (IRB) serves as an objective oversight committee that is governed by Federal Regulations. The primary function of the IRB is protection of human participants in research and managing risk to these participants. The IRB has the functional capacity to approve, deny, monitor, and require modifications in all research activities that fall within its jurisdiction ranging from full board reviews, exempt, and expedited. Within this realm, the IRB reviews the informed consent document. The idea of informed consent is rooted in the Declaration of Helsinki, Nuremberg Code, and Belmont Report.
