Takata,
a Japanese supplier, makes many of the airbags used in nearly two dozen
car brands in the United States. The airbags may spontaneously inflate,
sending shrapnel into the car’s interior. Takata accepted fault in
2013, but claimed that only six makes were involved. However, a New York
Times article in 2014 reported 139 injuries, including two deaths, from
all automakers. At first, Takata said that its propellants were
improperly handled and caused the airbags to burst. But later reports
revealed long-standing problems with unacceptable defect rates at some
plants and propellant problems. The Times article alleged that Takata
knew about the defects as early as 2004, conducted secret tests to
understand the problem, and later destroyed the data and physical
evidence. It took Takata four years to acknowledge the problem. Takata
called the Times article inaccurate, but as of 2015, had recalled 34
million vehicles . . . . Now, Takata’s reputation has taken a hit. Think
of yourself as a small crisis management team hired to help Takata

Hi:

It seems as if Takata still hasn’t taken full responsibility for all the vehicles that have their airbags installed in them.” Takata accepted fault in 2013, but claimed that only six makes were involved. The problem is that Takata needs to accept responsibility for their airbags on every vehicle that has their airbags installed in them. The goal should be to send recall notices out to every owner of a vehicle with that airbag. Many lives are potentially at stake everyday because of the airbags spontaneously inflate problems. It won’t be an easy venture to get every vehicle in to get fixed, and the article states that fixing the problem on older vehicles would be a challenge. If the problem can’t be fixed by the mechanics, then Takata should offer credit to the owner of the vehicle to get another vehicle that is safe. Now, this could financially ruin Takata to offer cash credit, however, they are being held accountable and getting sued already and if more accidents happen their company will be in financial ruins anyways. Takata needs to do the morale thing and help consumers with the older vehicles that the airbags can’t be fixed. In order to restore their reputation, they need to accept responsibility and make this problem right by ensuring that the public is safe in the vehicles with their airbags.

“Takata admitted it built nearly 4.5 million faulty inflators in total and that many of the inflators are now in vehicles long out of service. The 1.4 million inflators are only an estimate and could easily grow in number. The challenge of replacing roughly 56 million inflators has proven to be formidable, as 15.9 million defective airbags remain on the road, according to a recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report”. (Atiyeh & Blackwell) There seems to be conflicting reports between Takata, the newspaper articles and the blog posts. Takata just needs to own up to the fact that every vehicle that has their airbag could be at risk. To save their public image, they need to put the people’s safety first and stop trying to cover up the real truth.

Wouldn’t you be scared to drive in a vehicle that you knew has an airbag from Takata? What if you take the vehicle in to get the airbag fixed and they say it can’t be fixed? If that is the case, the problem will never be fixed, and the owner of the vehicle can never feel safe driving in the vehicle every day.

Hello Class and Professor,

After reading “Takata’s Reputation on the line” it is apparent that there is a very big issue on the hands of the company Takata. If this concern is not handled appropriately it could be detrimental to their business. The discussion question is, what obstacles could Takata face in trying to correct the problem and gain the trust of their customers back?

Well, Takata will need to notify their customers and get their vehicles back to the shops to be fixed before there is another incident that occurs. The obstacles that the company may face in accomplishing their goal are that the customers may not be reachable, customers may not get into the shop timely, and customers may not be able to be convinced that this this type of thing will not happen again.

These obstacles are ones that could have a heavy impact on the success of the company and as I stated if the company does not handle the situation with care and customer satisfaction in mind their business could start to tank. Even if the business handles this situation perfectly, the company will most likely need to prepare for their financial situation of correcting these issues with the airbags.

All,

After reading our discussion scenario for this week, it really hits home with most people each day. I drive my vehicle everyday as my main transportation to work and children to school. Thinking that something like this has happened and could happen to my family is a little scary. The element I see that is the problem, is quality control. The existing situation is that there are vehicles that are equipped with faulty airbags. The Goal is to correct the problem, recall the equipment and replace all bad parts. There could be many obstacles ahead of Takata, I see two main obstacles. The first is getting the vehicle in, to get the parts changed out. The second is funding, for this will all be money out of Takata’s bank just to correct the problem.

Guys we need to look at what we can do to resolve this problem. We need each of you to put your thinking caps on and come up with some solutions. Our name and brand will be taking a hit on this and we need to resolve the problem to ensure the safety of our customers. What Quality measure can we implement to ensure this problem does not happen again? We will be focusing on a continuous improvement strategy, any thoughts will be greatly helpful.

This will be a high difficulty task, we will be meeting each week and twice every odd week of the month. We will have to map our problem out and as we complete each task we will take it off the board. Once everyone has brainstormed we will post the implementation plan for all to see. This will be a complicated task due to the fact it is a safety issue for our customers.

The solution multiplicity is medium, all together there are only a couple ways to fix this problem. Recall the product and replace, or send part to customer. This makes it medium just because there are not that many different way to go about the solution.

Intrinsic interest will be low, for the team we need to get the problem fixed therefore they will be interested. If we are not able to come up with a solution, this will cost everyone their jobs. Our company will not be able to continue building airbags if no one will buy them.

Member familiarity will be medium, all members of the team are part of the company and work with the product. They have not had this issue before, but have worked with many recalls before.

Acceptance level is low, all will be on-board to correct our problem and show our customers that we will correct any defective product. Each member of this team is affected the success of the solution to the situation.

Intro to phil 101 responses

-Utilitarianism is a theory in which the morality of actions is judged by their consequences. The more beneficial an action is for all the more likely it is a morally good action. Jeremy Bentham was a classic utilitarian who pushed for the idea of the greatest happiness for all and that if an action produced happiness for the greater good of society then it was impossible for it to be morally wrong.

Bentham argues that when we think about whether someone/something ought to count morally that “The question is not, can they reason? Nor, can they talk? But, can they suffer?” I think it makes sense for him to make this kind of statement because in his belief as a utilitarian, he focused on pain and pleasure as the primary factors in determining the goodness of an action. So, for Bentham, the more one suffered from their action and the happier it made society then the action could be morally good. As I mentioned in my previous post from week 6, I talked about Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment and how some of his characters sought redemption through utilitarianism by committing a murder that is perceived as an act of utility. The murder was justified as beneficial to their society because the “victim” was a crooked pawnbroker that ripped off the poor and had no care for others and so their suffering (death) was far more beneficial to society than their current state of existence.

I think in some way Bentham’s theory about the ability to suffer as a way to look at whether something counts morally is still something that is being followed today in the justice system. The idea is that people who commit crimes are tried in front of the people and a decision is made on the severity of their crimes and then we determine how they should suffer to repay society, whether it be community service or serving prison time. As for the treatment of non-human animals, I’m not entirely sure whether their suffering or happiness really affects our society the same way as a human would suffer or be happy. Would it be wise to think that because animals are sometimes considered a lesser species due to “lack of intellect” that they wouldn’t be considered a proponent in utilitarianism? that whatever they experience and feel aren’t the same magnitude as humans?

When assessing the morality of actions what should be considered more important consequences or intentions? This week the question focuses on comparing the morality of an act and the consequences of an act. Two different philosophical perspectives can be took on this matter the first one being Kant’s who focused on the intentions behind the actions, and the other coming from Bentham and Mill who focused on the moral worth of the consequences. The biggest difference between these two methods is that Kant uses practical reason to determine the “should” to justify the means of an action as opposed to moral reasoning that would focus on what is right overall. The next question that was posed this week was do good intentions save bad outcomes and vice versa. It can be said that some of the worst things have be executed with the best of intentions, but the person committing the act probably feels justified in their actions or at least in the moment anyway. For example when two opposing forces in conflict with one another meet morality has a different face depending which side of a conflict you fall on. Also if only one of intentions or consequences can be prioritized when looking at an act, then priority would be dependent on the perspective the act was being looked at. This can be determined because as an individual looking at their own actions will focus on the moral of their intent and would want to be judge by that intent even if the consequence of that outcome is bad. If that same individual had to judge the acts of others then would focus on the consequences of the acts of others regardless of intent to determine if the act is moral or not.

(2016) indicated that to compose a good persuasive essay, the writer must take a stance, know their audience, provide thorough research on the topic and determine the structure of the essay. Additionally, writers must support their arguments by using facts from their research, observations, and personal experiences. Purdue University (n.d.) indicated that it is crucial to research both sides of the issue. This helps the writer find common grounds, understand the history of the subject, determine the counter-arguments, and find support to improve their stance. When writing the essay, it is essential not to lecture, threaten, or bully the audience (Purdue University, n.d.). It can be helpful to write the persuasive essay and then take a day or two off and revisit the piece with fresh eyes (Scribendi Inc., 2016). When revisiting, ask questions like does the essay sound logical or convincing? Will the reader be persuaded by what’s written? Was enough evidence provided?

The basic premise of a persuasive essay is to present your point of view about a subject and attempt to persuade the reader to side with you. There is a broad range of topics that can be chosen to write about. One of the most important aspects of writing an essay like this is to be able to “find strong support for your own perspective”(Purdue Writing Lab, n.d.). Doing this would require you to find supporting evidence that is from a credible source and has pertinent information. Many times it can be helpful to find a study done on your subject. Finding statistics about the issue you have chosen is also a helpful way to persuade your reader. Staying away from obtaining information from opinion pieces is necessary as you will want to strive to find facts. It might be useful to acquire sources that contradict what you believe so you will be able to back up why you think the way you do. Then when using these resources it is important to quote them properly so none of the information within your paper is misleading.

While virtually all of us have an idea about what we want to change and how we want to accomplish that change, we seldom create a comprehensive plan that includes implementation steps. Far too often, a well-conceived change initiative ceases to exist altogether, because the change agent has not appropriately addressed many of the barriers to successful implementation. From poor communication to change resistance to poor design to lack of training, implementation barriers need considerable attention from change agents. What part do leaders play in implementation? The videos for this discussion have some clues about why change initiative implementation may fail. Some of those barriers are addressed in your text, but others are found in many other places.

There is no greater barrier to change than communication issues. There is no greater skill than communication that can cross levels, depth, scope, and breadth of people and information. People who are adept communicators quite literally link the world for everyone else. Using the video above, think about the communication that Mr. Laipply uses as he works through his time on stage. Did you understand it? Did you laugh with the audience? What was the language that he used? Why did you understand it? How does culture feed into understanding this video? How does empathy impact our communication skills? Is empathy its own language? Do change agents need a great deal of empathy? Explain. Is there value in outrospection in change management? Why is Sinek’s message so impactful? What techniques is he using to communicate his message? All of the questions here are presented to help create a framework for your answer. They do not require explicit and listed answers.
