Walden Afro Barometer and HS Long Study Testing Hypotheses Scenario Report

Description

This week you have explored three different approaches to t tests. By this point, you know that each test has assumptions about the data and type of research questions it can answer. For this Assignment, you will be provided with three scenarios. As you read the scenarios, be sure and think about aligning the appropriate t test with the question. Consider whether the data are independent samples and if two samples are being compared.

To prepare for this Assignment:

  • Review the Learning Resources and the media programs related to t tests.
  • For additional support, review the Skill Builder: Research Design and Statistical Design and the Skill Builder: Hypothesis Testing for Independent Samples t-test, which you can find by navigating back to your Blackboard Course Home Page. From there, locate the Skill Builder link in the left navigation pane.
  • Also, review the t test scenarios found in this week’s Learning Resources and consider the three different approaches of t tests:
    • Independent sample t test
    • Paired sample t test
    • One sample t test
  • Based on each of the three research scenarios provided, open the High School Longitudinal Study dataset or the Afrobarometer dataset from this week’s Learning Resources using SPSS software, then choose and run the appropriate t test.
  • Once you perform your t test analyses, review Chapter 11 of the Wagner text to understand how to copy and paste your output into your Word document.

For this Assignment:

Write a 2- to 3-paragraph analysis of your t test results for each research scenario and include the SPSS syntax and output. Do not forget to evaluate if the t test assumptions are met, justify the selection of type of t test, and report the effect size. Based on your results, provide an explanation of what the implications of social change might be.

Use proper APA format, citations, and referencing for your analysis, research questions, and output.

PSYC 3004 Walden Psychological Disorders Abnormal Behavior Discussion

Description

Discussion: Abnormal Behavior and the Four Ds

One of the first topics that the textbook author addresses in Chapter 1 is how abnormal is defined. In the section entitled “What Is Psychological Abnormality?” Comer identifies “the four Ds” that can be used to identify what is abnormal, as follows: deviance, distress, dysfunction, and danger. In this Discussion, you will apply this framework to a consideration of abnormal behaviors that you have experienced or encountered in your own life.

To prepare for this Discussion: Think about concrete examples of abnormal behavior you have experienced or encountered.

Post a response to the following:

  • In your description, be sure to identify and explain elements that relate to each of “the four Ds.”
  • Explain at least one cultural factor that may have impacted whether the behavior described would be considered abnormal.
  • Discuss two limitations of “the four Ds” in defining abnormal behavior highlighted in your personal experience or encounter. If you do not feel there were limitations per your experience or encounter, explain at least one limitation of “the four Ds” approach to defining abnormality in general.
  • In conclusion, discuss your reaction to the ongoing challenge of settling upon one definition of abnormality.

Assignment: Models of Abnormality

As evidenced in Chapter 2 of the textbook, contemporary thinking about psychological disorders includes a broad variety of models or paradigms. The list of models used in framing psychological disorders includes the following: biological, psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic-existential, and sociocultural. Each model highlights different factors in the development of abnormal behavior and suggests different avenues for the treatment of psychological disorders. In this week’s Assignment, you will closely examine these models and compare and contrast two of your own choosing.

To prepare for this Assignment:

  • Examine the textbook chapter on models of abnormality and identify two models you find most intriguing.
  • Review the personal experience or encounter with abnormal behavior you explored in this week’s Discussion.

The Assignment:

In a 2- to 3-page paper, provide a brief description in your own words of each of the two models you chose and discuss why these two models appeal to you.

Using the personal experience or encounter with abnormal behavior you explored in this week’s Discussion, compare and contrast the two models (describe similarities and differences) in terms of how each might explain the development of the abnormal behavior described.

Compare and contrast the approaches to treatment that each model might suggest.

PS 410 Purdue University Global Unit 7 Screening and Assessments Discussion

Description

In this unit, we covered how we can test the hypothesis of the function of behavior using the Functional Analysis. The difference between FBA (Functional Behavior Assessment) and FA (Functional Analysis) is that with FBA we are forming a hypothesis about the functional relationship between antecedent and consequence conditions and behavior. With Functional Analysis, we are confirming or proving that these hypothesized relationships are indeed cause and effect relationships. This is done through systematic manipulation of antecedents and consequences to prove that these are the variables that are responsible for the interfering behavior.

Debbie is a ten-year-old student at Pine Valley Elementary school. She was previously diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at the age of two. Debbie has, historically, engaged in self-injurious behavior (SIB), including head banging, which has resulted in significant facial injury. A previous functional behavior assessment was conducted by the BCBA from the school district and it was determined that the function of the SIB appeared to be escape from non-preferred tasks or demands. The teacher was not sure that the results were accurate, as she felt that Debbie was usually compliant with most requests. You are taking over this case and have determined that a structural and consequence analysis should be completed to test the hypothesis that difficult tasks are the antecedent to SIB.

  • According to the examples in the text, how would you conduct a structural analysis for this scenario? Be sure to discuss specific antecedent conditions that could be presented and how you would collect data.
  • According to the examples in the text, how would you conduct a consequence analysis for this scenario? Be sure to discuss specific consequence conditions that could be presented and how you would collect data.

Peer Responses: Review your peers’ outline of how they would conduct a structural and consequence analysis for the provided scenario. Explain ethical considerations that would apply to the functional analysis that your peer has outlined.

PSYC 335 UMGC Borderline Personality Disorder Essay “

Description

The Applied Personality Project requires you to critically analyze personality information found in the popular media in relation to empirical research, personality theory, and your own life. You will demonstrate that you are an intelligent consumer of personality research and can think critically about personality theory, assessment, and research in relation to your daily life.

The Applied Personality Project consists of four components:

Component 1:  Summary and Analysis of Popular Media Article or Current Event

You will start by locating a popular media article, video or current event that is relevant to personality psychology. Relevant topics may include personality theory, assessment, use of assessment results, personality disorders, or personality research. Your article or current event must have been published (or occurred) within the last six months. For this component of the assignment, you will use information found in the popular media. This includes articles or events distributed via social media, blogs, videos (e.g., Ted Talks), television shows, newspaper reports, magazines, and similar sources.

For example, the LA Times published a report of identical triplets separated at birth in a secret psychology study to understand the relative influence of nature and nurture in personality development (“The surreal, sad story behind the acclaimed new documentary, ‘Three Identical Strangers’”: https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/la-et-mn-three-identical-strangers-documentary-20180702-story.html). An article such as this would be appropriate for your target article/event.

Provide a two-page summary and analysis of the article/event that addresses the following questions:

  • What is the focus of the article/event?
  • Why is this article/event relevant now?
  • What is the relationship between this article/event and personality psychology?
  • What are the key conclusions, questions, or issues relevant to this article/event?
  • What questions remain unanswered in relationship to this article/event?

Your summary and analysis should be written as a coherent essay (do not format as a list of answers to these questions). You may include additional insights in your analysis, but you must address these key issues. In addition, you must provide a hyperlink to the article/event that you are focusing on; if the article/event is not online, you must provide a complete citation so that the instructor can view your article/event.

Component 2:  Research Article Application

The next step is to find an empirical, primary-source journal article that is relevant to your article/event. Empirical, primary-source articles are original reports of research published in scholarly journals (such as the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology). You will use the UMGC library database to find primary-source, empirical research. To find a relevant article, you will use personality terms, ideas or theories discussed in your article/event as key words in your library database search. It is your responsibility to make sure that the journal article you select is appropriate. If you are unsure about the relevance of your article, contact your instructor for approval.  Articles must meet the following criteria:

  • Primary research – Articles should report the results of an original research study (no meta-analyses, summaries, editorials or theoretical articles).
  • Refereed – Articles must come from peer-reviewed journals found in the UMGC library.
  • Personality focus – Articles must be relevant to personality psychology.
  • Recent – Articles must have been published within the last 10 years.

For example, the following would be a relevant primary-source, empirical journal article for investigating the influence of nature and nurture on personality:

McCrae, R. R., Costa, P. T., Jr., Ostendorf, F., Angleitner, A., H?ebí?ková, M., Avia, M. D., … Smith, P. B. (2000). Nature over nurture: Temperament, personality, and life span development. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 78(1), 173–186. https://doi-org.ezproxy.umgc.edu/10.1037/0022-3514…

Write a three-page summary, analysis, and application of the journal article that addresses the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of this research?
  • How did the researchers investigate their research question?
  • Are the conclusions of the study appropriate? Has the author overemphasized or under-emphasized any findings?
  • What are the key strengths and weaknesses of this study?
  • How does this research add to our understanding of personality or personality theory?
  • How does this study inform your popular article/event?
  • Do the conclusions of this research align with the message of your article/event?

Your summary, analysis, and application should be written as a coherent essay (do not format as a list of answers to these questions). You may include additional insights in your analysis, but you must address these key issues.

Component 3:  Connection to Personality Theory

The third step is to analyze your popular article/event in relation to three different theories that we explored throughout the course. For each theory, you will want to explore the relevance (or lack thereof) for understanding your article/event.

Write a one- to two-page analysis for each of your three theories that includes the following information:

  • Brief overview of theory (up to two paragraphs with appropriate citations)
  • Discussion of how the theory either supports and explains your article/event OR how the theory offers an alternate understanding of your article/event
  • Analysis of the value of the theory for understanding personality in the context of your article/event

Component 4:  Personal Relevance

The last step is to reflect upon the popular article/event, research, and personality theory in relation to your own life.

Write a three-page reflection and analysis that addresses the following questions:

  • How is the material in this article/event relevant to your life?
  • What can you learn from the personality theories or research relevant to this article/event?
  • Does the article/event or research challenge any of your old opinions? Or does it challenge you to form any new opinions?
  • How can you apply what you have learned about personality research or theory to better understand your life? What is the practical value to understanding personality research or theory?
  • What concerns do you have about the article/event, personality research, or personality theory?

pick one day and seek to structure your thoughts and behaviors entirely around helping others

Description

Prosocial Behavior

Much of what we tend to focus on when we study social psychology are topics that often have a negative connotation such as conformity, prejudice, aggression or obedience. A huge component of the study of social psychology; however, focuses on prosocial behavior – behaviors that focus on compassion and helping others. For this activity, you will focus on this more uplifting aspect of social psychology. Topics that fall under the area of prosocial behavior include altruism, helping, bystander intervention, empathy, and compassion, among others.

For this exercise, pick one day and seek to structure your thoughts and behaviors entirely around helping others. With each interaction or action you take, pause to think and ask yourself “is there a way I might help another here?” Hold a door for someone, offer your seat, share a smile, give a sincere compliment, show empathy to another, attempt to be more patient or understanding, etc. Your efforts should be in social settings that involve interactions with others (rather than something such as donating to a charity for instance). The goal is to be as thoughtfully prosocial in your interactions throughout the day as possible.

  • At the beginning of the day, jot down your general mood, feelings, attitude, etc.
  • Then throughout the day, whenever possible, carry a small notebook with you or make notes in an app on your phone to jot down meaningful encounters or experiences as you attempt to engage in prosocial behaviors.
  • At the end of the day, again reflect and take notes on how you feel, your general mood, feelings and attitudes, etc.

In a 5-7 slide PowerPoint presentation, not counting title or reference slides:

  • Summarize your experience. Describe the prosocial behaviors you engaged in, others’ reactions to these behaviors, and your assessment of any changes in mood, attitude, good fortune, or anything else of note you experienced.
  • Review what you have learned about human behavior in social settings this week in your readings and CogBooks activities. Connect what you learned or experienced through your day of conscious, prosocial behavior with the terms, concepts, and theories from your research. Integrate at least two academic sources (your assigned readings/resources can comprise one of these sources), citing any references used in APA format.
  • Describe any new insights you gained through this experience about your interactions with others on a daily basis, including any behaviors you wish to change or to continue.
  • Use the features of PowerPoint to your advantage to communicate your ideas – include pictures, audio recorded narration, speaker’s notes, video, links, etc. as appropriate to enhance your ideas.
  • Include an APA formatted title slide and reference slide. APA components such as an abstract, headings, etc. are not required since this is a PowerPoint presentation.

Submit your presentation as an attachment in the Week 7 Assignment Prosocial Behavior link in the Assignments area of the classroom no later than 11:55 pm EST Sunday of Week 7.
