The purpose of this project is to apply the students’ knowledge of Universal design and code compliance to a residential floor plan. Students are required to devise and develop accessible strategies for various spaces within the home. Utilizing an array of drawing techniques, students will craft presentation-quality conceptual sketches to illustrate their chosen design solutions. Students will then direct their focus on the bathroom, for which they will create a floor and furniture layout and partial set of working drawings, showing the implementation of all applicable building codes, ADA codes, and federal regulations. Students are required to choose appropriate light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, finishes, and accessories for the bathroom space, devising a concept that is safe, accessible, and supports the daily needs of people with varying levels of ability.
