Knowing and understanding evidence-based practice is really important in the nursing industry. As nurses, we should be growing our knowledge everyday to give the best possible care to our patients. With CMS giving financial penalties to hospitals for various hospital acquired problems, it is important to use the knowledge we gain on evidence-based practices to not only improve patient care, but also to help secure full payments for the patients care while hospitalized (Hughes, 2008). While working in a hospital, nurses see all kinds of interventions for different ailments and can identify when the interventions being used do or do not work. When an intervention does not work as a nurse, we should find what the best evidence-based practice is and work towards improving the current practices to meet the same outcome. For example, consider the use of briefs while a patient is in the hospital. The use of briefs in a hospital setting can cause skin breakdown, causing a pressure ulcer (Bitencourt et al., 2018). Since CMS has identified hospital-acquired pressure ulcers as one of the never events that does not get full reimbursement, it would be beneficial to implement best practice and stop using briefs for patients in the bed (Hughes, 2008).
Learning how to research and understand the results of different research studies helps me identify what worked and/or what didn’t work in the study. Knowing how to find and interpret research studies will impact my career from now till retirement. Learning and leading my fellow nurses to provide the best possible patient care is my goal. Using the research tools I learned will help me accomplish this goal.
Healthcare is constantly changing and moving forward with new technology and knowledge. It is our job as nurses to keep up with the changes in our industry. In many hospital settings, there are ways of bringing change to practices that are no longer considered best practice. I hope to help identify areas of improvement and work with others to collaborate on providing updated excellent service to our patients.
Overall, I believe the knowledge I gained from this class will benefit my career and my patients.
