Mary Colleen Bhalla, M., Amos Burgess, M., Jennifer Frey, P., & William Hardy, B. M. (2015). Geriatric Disaster Preparedness. Geriatric Disaster Preparedness, 443-446. doi:10.1017/S1049023X15005075

This peer-review journal focuses on a study into how many elderly people are usually prepared during times of disaster and who are ready for disaster strikes in the future. The authors found out that the elderly population was very vulnerable in times of disaster. Several of them were found to have a chronic medical problem that warranted them to need medical facility assistance and medication. Some older people were even found to be more dependent on caregivers to manage their day to day activities.

The authors’ thesis was that many elderly people were not prepared for disaster strikes and therefore assessed the potential plans and needs for the elder population in times of local disaster. The research was to be carried extensively to people of sixty-five to ninety-four years. Thirteen visitors to the emergency department and eighty-seven patients were interviewed for the research. This age bracket interview made all the findings credible.

The authors are board-certified emergency medicine physicians which makes them very qualified to perform medical research work on patients. Their level of academic prowess in the medical field makes them fit to conduct research and provide their findings as credible.

This peer-review journal will be beneficial to the elderly population, caregivers and medical practitioners. This is because it will help them prepare the elderly or themselves for future calamities and help them understand the importance of geriatric disaster preparedness.
