Ethical drift Moral courage and beneficence.
Nurses experience moral distress when they cannot do what they consider the right thing That situation or encounter becomes an ethical dilemma. While some have the courage to speak up or take action, others do not.A few years back we needed a second nurse as a co signer / double checker of insulin. One day I observed a RN typing in a nurses code as the double checker of the insulin without that nurse being there for the double check. Me not being from that unit I did question it. The response was we all do that here we are to busy on this unit with critically ill patients. I did speak up and say that this is even more of a reason to do the double check for the safety of the patients. Moral courage involves the willingness to assert ourselves when tempted to just “go with the flow”. As per an article Ethical Drift by Robert J.Sternberg “People who experience ethical drift usually do not tell themselves and others, How unethical am I! Rather, in order to maintain an ethical image of themselves (false though that image may be) they tend to resort to rationalizations: It was Gods will. I was forced to do it; I had no choice. It was either me or him/her. They got what they deserved. He/she was not really human in any case. I did it for the good of the organization. It was the right thing to do under the circumstances. ” I did after this encounter fill out a safety occurrence on this situation. It was not to long after that all the units had mandatory education modules to complete on this matter. So, in the future I will continue to speak up when I feel something is ethically wrong. The ethical principle used was beneficence which is at the heart of every nursing practice to preventing harm and promoting good.
