Question 1188

Question Answered step-by-step Maria, a new professional nurse graduate, has been asked to… Maria, a new professional nurse graduate, has been asked to participate in her unit’s quality improvement council. Each unit in the hospital has been directed to focus on nursing-sensitive indicators and report the following results to the National Database of Quality Indicators (NDQI) database: hours per patient-day, falls with injury, pressure ulcers, and registered nurse (RN) satisfaction. Maria has been informed that over the past year, the hospital has used the results to implement several changes, including decreasing the nurse-to-patient ratio on select units, developing a clinical ladders program, and increasing orientation services for newly hired professionals. Questions 1.    Where can Maria find more information about nursing-sensitive indicators and about best practices in other hospitals? Ø Maria can find more information about nursing-sensitive indicators and the best practices of the other hospitals by reviewing or looking up in the annual report of the National Database of Quality Indicators (NDQI). NDQI is the only national nursing database that provides quarterly and annual reporting of structure, process, and outcome indicators that evaluates the nursing care in each unit level. With this, Maria can get enough and reliable information and this will help her formulate her course action for her to contribute and implement in her unit some changes that will produce a quality nursing care.       2.    As a new graduate, how can Maria contribute something unique? Ø As a new graduate, Maria can contribute something unique by implementing something new or by focusing on the small problems of her unit, which is usually not being noticed in her workplace. She can also contribute something unique by implementing new strategies, which has not been implemented ever before in their unit. However, she must still do some research first before implementing her strategies. To plan out her plan of action, she can use the 5 steps of evidence-based practice according to the study of Southern Utah University. 1st step is to ask a question, to what are the dilemmas needed to address in their unit. Second, is to collect evidence and research, which potentially answers the question, next is to evaluate the evidence, implement findings, and last is she can assess the outcome, whether or not the problem in her unit is addressed. 3.    How can Maria approach this challenge in a way that she can learn something from her co-workers and her co-workers can learn something from her? Ø Maria can approach this challenge by having an open communication between her and her co-workers. Each one of the members of her unit should have the right to express their insights, suggestions and opinions regarding the implementation of the intervention they have agreed upon. They should listen to each other’s insights and provide constructive criticisms so that they can learn something from each other, more likely, at the end of their meeting, they should agree in one specific goal so that the plan will be executed properly.     Reference: Montalvo, I., (September 30, 2007) “The National Database of Nursing Quality IndicatorsTM (NDNQI®)” OJIN: The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing.
