Read the following case study. Using the text entry function, answer the questions.
Max and Chris were juniors in high school who had been dating for two months, but they hadn’t had sexual intercourse; in fact, neither had had sex with anyone. Neither of them was out to their families yet and were anxious about their families finding out that they are gay. In the meantime, they had lots of fun together and were taking it slow. Then Max went to work at a camp in another state for the summer. They planned to talk, text, Facetime, and resume their relationship in the fall.
While away, Max met Justin. Justin was in college and was sexually experienced. Their relationship became sexual quickly. Justin made it clear that sex was part of the deal and Max was swept away with the excitement of being with someone who was so confident and open. When summer was over, Justin made it clear that their relationship was over. He had other plans back at college.
Max returned home confused, guilty, and unable to tell Chris anything about the summer romance. A week later, Justin texted Max to say he had taken an HIV test and it was positive. Max panicked and didn’t know what to do.
Max tried to talk with his mom. Max said he knew someone who might have HIV. His mom said, “That’s exactly what happens to all these kids having sex these days!” Max didn’t say anymore to his mom.
In health class, they were due for lessons on HIV and other STIs, but Mr. Bennet was not comfortable talking about sex. Furthermore, he thought teaching “safer sex” gave kids permission to go ahead and do it! Somehow, he used the 8 weeks of class teaching about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
Max had to go to his doctor for a regular checkup. He thought he could use this appointment to ask his doctor about it. While the doctor was performing his exam, he asked Max if he had a girlfriend. When Max said no, the doctor said, “Well that’s good! You don’t want to get anyone pregnant!” Max didn’t feel comfortable disclosing that he was gay and said no more.
Meanwhile, Max and Chris had resumed their relationship. When he and Chris began to move towards intercourse, Max said they’d better use condoms. Chris refused – absolutely. He said condoms weren’t necessary since this was going to be their first time. Max didn’t know what reason to give for using condoms – without telling Chris about the summer romance.
Finally, Max gave in. He and Chris had sex without using any protection. A few months later, Chris decided to enlist in the military. During his physical exam, he found out he had HIV.
