You should write a substantial paragraph for each question, at least 10 sentences in each question:

1. In Pan’s Labyrinth what does it mean that Ofelia doesn’t follow the fairy’s instructions for the key in the Pale Man’s hall? What is the significance of her actions? What does it say about her character?

2. In Tomi Adeyemi’s Children of Blood and Bone Book, discuss the author’s note at the end of the book. What real world parallels can you draw between the challenges in this book and the challenges minorities face today? Why do you think the author chose to portray these challenges through a fantasy lens?

3 .Early in Amir and Hassan’s friendship, they often visit a pomegranate tree where they spend hours reading and playing. ‘One summer day, I used one of Ali’s kitchen knives to carve our names on it: ‘Amir and Hassan, the sultans of Kabul. Those words made it formal: the tree was ours.” In a letter to Amir later in the story, Hassan mentions that “the tree hasn’t borne fruit in years.” Discuss the significance of this tree.
