The women in White

There are two parts to this essay:

1. Take one character from The Woman in White and retell an important episode in the story from their point of view (2 pages). I suggest you use a character who has NOT already given us their version of the episode.

For this portion, you will be graded on:

a. your ability to convey the character’s point of view

b. your use of relevant details gleaned from our knowledge of the character throughout the book

c. your interpretation of the character’s emotional state at this point in the narrative

d. clear and effective use of English

2. Write a reflection on how your fictional reconstruction allowed you to imagine characters’ emotions, barriers to equal treatment in society, and/or Victorian conceptions and metaphors of illness and identity, using quotes from the novel (2-3 pages).

For this portion, you will be graded on:

a. your ability to reflect on the process of writing about another’s point of view

b. your understanding of Victorian barriers to equal treatment in society and/or Victorian conceptions and metaphors of illness and identity

c. your integration of quotes from the novel

d. clear and effective use of English
