Part One: Outer Research (2-3 pages). Beginning with Chapter 8 in Skip Downing’s On Course, research the components and factors of Emotional Intelligence. After you clarify your understanding of this intelligence, identify at least three (3) sources other than Downing that explain Emotional Intelligence, or EQ (you might want to look at work by Daniel Goleman as a start). At least one of these sources must be a book from a library (the other two may be detailed online sources—see Keys for Writers on “Evaluating Sources” to assess your sources). Locate, read and take notes from these sources. Your goal will be to explain Emotional Intelligence, giving examples and a detailed explanation in the first section of your Research Paper.

Write a 2-3 page Introduction to your Research Paper that explains what Emotional Intelligence is, how it is formed/used, and what impact it has on our lives. Be thorough and detailed in your explanation.

Part Two: Inner Research (2-3 pages). Please observe your own emotional intelligence during the next two weeks. Identify one area that has prevented you from reaching one of your goals for this English class (or another class, if you have reached every goal for this class). Create a list of the emotional patterns you observe in yourself that create obstacles to reaching your goals. Make sure you have identified patterns in each of the four components. Theorize possible scripts that may be fueling your challenges in Emotional Intelligence.

In the second 2-3 page writing assignment, discuss and explain the emotional patterns as well as your effectiveness in components of Emotional Intelligence. The area should be one that has presented an obstacle to success in English 1A this semester. You should provide specific details and examples to support your main points.

Part Three: Applied Research (2-3 pages). Finally, once you have discussed EQ, and your own EQ, what new strategies do you think might create a different EQ outcome, raising your overall effectiveness? Discuss several strategies you could use to increase EQ. Discuss the new outcomes you believe might result from such a shift in your EQ system. End the Research Paper with an appropriate conclusion, summarizing your findings.
