  1. Describe the process of perception as a series of steps, beginning with the environmental stimulus and culminating in the behavioral responses of perceiving, recognizing, and acting.

Compare and contrast the functioning of axons and electrical wires in terms of their structure and the nature of the electrical signals they conduct.

  4. What is inference? Describe Hermann von Helmholtz’s Theory of Unconscious Inference. Compare and contrast the likeilhood principle with unconscious inference listing three similarities and three differences.
  5. When you walk from outside, which is illuminated by sunlight, to inside, which is illuminated by “tungsten” illumination, your perception of colors remains fairly constant. But under some illuminations, such as street lights called “sodium vapor” lights that sometimes illuminate highways or parking lots, colors do seem to change. Why do you think color constancy would hold under some illuminations, but not others?
  6. What is sensory adaptation? How does it occur within the various senses? What function does sensory adaptation serve? Provide a relevant example that illustrates your point.
  7. What are the characteristics of the energy that we see as visible light? Provide an example illustrating how these characteristics are expressed when someone sees a rainbow. What types of things (situations and/or objects) can interfere with these characteristics?
  8. How does the eye transduce light energy into a neural message? What is the blind spot in the eye and how does it impact the transduction of light energy?
  9. How is visual information processed in the brain? What are some things (situations and/or objects) which can impede visual information being processed in the brain? Please include a relevant example to illustrate your answer.

We are embarking on a study of personality and how it is shaped and defined. Consider the theories of Sigmund Freud (Schultz & Schultz, 2017, pp. 43-47, 51-57) and Carl Jung (Schultz & Schultz, 2017, pp. 86-96), who both focused their ideas surrounding personality on the primacy of unconscious forces in personality development.

For this week’s assignment seek out an example from popular culture (which can include, but is not necessarily limited to, television, film, literature, and/or graphic novel/comic book) that illustrates one, or perhaps both, of their ideas in action. Then discuss the ways that the chosen media reflects these concepts.

In other words, think about this: Which media, such as movies, television shows, books, or other writings are influenced by or are written about the theories of Sigmund Freud or Carl Jung? Once you have found an example, then think about, research, and describe in writing, how your choice reflects Jung and Freud’s concepts.

Marijuana Brownie Overdose?

In April 2006, a Michigan police officer and his wife attempted to get “high” by eating brownies laced with marijuana that he had confiscated from criminal suspects. Approximately 90 minutes after eating the brownies, the officer made the following panicked 911 emergency call:

Officer: I think I’m having an overdose and so’s my wife…

Dispatcher: Overdose of what?

Officer: Marijuana. I don’t know if there was something in it … Can you please send rescue?

Dispatcher: Do you guys have a fever or anything?

Officer: No, I’m just …, I think we’re dying.

Dispatcher: How much did you guys have?

Officer: Uh, I don’t know we made brownies and I think we’re dead. I really do … Time is going by really, really, really, really slow.

Listeners to an audio transcript of the call found it hilarious, despite the officer’s clear distress. One reason that many were amused is because they recognized the likelihood of death following marijuana consumption is low. They might have also understood some basic facts about routes of drug administration, which is most germane to our discussion in this chapter.

Like most drugs, marijuana can be ingested in several ways, including orally. The oral route is convenient (no special equipment is needed), but the time that it takes to feel “high” using this route is often delayed and the effects tend to last longer. Inexperienced users might become impatient after several minutes without feeling a recognizable change in mood. This can lead to the immediate consumption of even more drug in hopes of bringing about an effect. With a drug like marijuana, this would be a mistake, because not only can the onset of drug actions be delayed for up to an hour after ingestion, but also the effects can be quite intense if a large dose was taken. The point here is that knowing a few basic pharmacology facts might help one minimize drug-related harms and avoid the panic and public humiliation experienced by the officer in this example.

Naturalistic Observation

  • Naturalistic observation (i.e. unstructured observation) involves studying the spontaneous behaviour of participants in natural surroundings. The researcher simply records what they see in whatever way they can.
  • Compared with controlled/structured methods it is like the difference between studying wild animals in a zoo and studying them in their natural habitat.
  • With regard to human subjects Margaret Mead used this method to research the way of life of different tribes living on islands in the South Pacific. Kathy Sylva used it to study children at play by observing their behaviour in a playgroup in Oxfordshire.

Strengths

1 By being able to observe the flow of behaviour in its own setting studies have greater ecological validity.

2. Like case studies naturalistic observation is often used to generate new ideas. Because it gives the researcher the opportunity to study the total situation it often suggests avenues of enquiry not thought of before.

Limitations

1. These observations are often conducted on a micro (small) scale and may lack a representative sample (biased in relation to age, gender, social class or ethnicity). This may result in the findings lacking the ability to be generalized to wider society.

2. Natural observations are less reliable as other variables cannot be controlled. This makes it difficult for another researcher to repeat the study in exactly the same way.

3. A further disadvantage is that the researcher needs to be trained to be able to recognise aspects of a situation that are psychologically significant and worth further attention.

4. With observations we do not have manipulations of variables (or control over extraneous variables) which means cause and effect relationships cannot be established.

Examples

A classic example of naturalistic observation can be found in many experimental psychology courses. In one study, a student researcher stands on a corner with a stop sign. He or she is holding a pad of paper or a similar recording device. The student notes whether passing drivers completely stop at the sign. The second phase of the observation takes place on the same corner, except this time the student is hidden. Equal time is given to both sections of the study. In general, people will make sure to come to a complete stop when they know they’re being observed. For this study to have real weight, it needs to be done a statistically significant number times. For the purposes of experimental psychology in a college course, however, one or two rounds will suffice.

Another example of naturalistic observation is a study at a local mall or shopping center. An observer notes how many individuals in a group open the door for other members of the group.

Assignment

For this assignment you are to perform and write up a brief naturalistic observation. Follow the guidelines below. You may work with one partner.

1) Decide what you will observe and develop a hypothesis – What do you THINK you will see during your observation. For example, ‘It is hypothesized 60% of women will look in the mirror while only 25% of men will look in the mirror while passing by.”

2) Choose a setting and time for the observation. You are to spend approximately fifteen to twenty minutes watching and making a detailed record of the subject(s), gathering data which will “begin” to test your hypothesis. Plan your observational “method” to be sure you are not “discovered” (so that the “naturalistic” quality of the observation is not lost). Take notes on everything you can observe about the subject(s). Attach the notes to your write up. (The notes do not need to be typed.)

After you have finished with the observation, 3) write a minimum of 500 words reporting of your observations. Try to be as objective as possible, but feel free to make well-reasoned inferences about what you have seen.

Your report should include the following:

An introduction which tells what the observation is about. You should explain how you came up with your hypothesis and why you chose the particular setting and subject(s) to test.

A detailed account of the subject(s) and of the behaviors you observed is needed (Data either in the form of percentages or raw numbers is needed)

Also, a discussion of any conclusions you can draw from the observation should be included.

Finally, an evaluation (or critique) of your observation, mentioning any problem areas where you feel you could have improved your results is also required. You could, for example, explain any flaws in your “method” which led to inaccurate data.
