Application: Case Conceptualization

When a client comes into your office, this person has certain expectations, some idea of what his or her problem is, and hopes of getting some answers, making changes, and/or obtaining relief. This week, you learned about the importance of developing a case conceptualization to help formulate successful treatment planning.

Developing a case conceptualization includes defining the problem, identifying and evaluating outcome goals, and planning a treatment. This process follows the sequence of scientific thinking: problem definition, hypothesis formulation, hypothesis testing, data collection, results, and recommendations. Keep this sequence in mind as you prepare to complete this week’s Application Assignment.

To prepare for this assignment:

• Review Chapters 1, 2, and 3 in Clinical Process: From Conceptualization to Treatment Planning, paying particular attention to the steps necessary for case conceptualization development. Discern the many gender and multicultural considerations outlined in these chapters.
• Think about how the development of a case conceptualization follows the sequence of any good research model.
• Study “The ABC and Person-In-Environment Assessment Model” from Chapter 1 in Clinical Process: From Conceptualization to Treatment Planning, and consider how using such a graph might help you understand your client more fully and, therefore, develop a more useful case conceptualization.
• Review the complex elements involved in developing a treatment plan, keeping in mind the various gender and multicultural factors outlined in Chapter 2 from the course textbook, Clinical Process: From Conceptualization to Treatment Planning.
• Carefully review the Case Conceptualization Exemplar and the Case Study Exemplar: Linda, paying particular attention to Linda’s presenting issues and how they are represented in each section of the Case Conceptualization Exemplar.
• Consider the importance of case conceptualization and think about what each section of the Case Conceptualization Exemplar represents. Think about how empirical research may influence your decision making.

The assignment: (2–3pages)

• Describe major components necessary to develop an investigation of evidence-based practice and analyze how EBP resembles the scientific method.
• Explain the value and importance of case conceptualization.
• Analyze each section of the Case Conceptualization Exemplar.
• Explain how each section of the Case Conceptualization Exemplar relates to each other.

Support your Application Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list only for those resources not included in the Learning Resources for this course. Keep in mind the importance of using empirically supported research to support your points of view.

In preparation for your final project it will be important that you locate a number of peer-reviewed journal articles which focus on the key variables in your experiment. For this annotated bibliography you will need to locate at least 4 relevant peer-reviewed journal articles from Keiser’s online library.

What is an annotated bibliography?

It is an organized list of sources (referenced in APA format), such as books, journals, newspapers, magazines, reputable web pages, etc., each of which is followed by a summary or description of the source.

Annotations may consist of all or part of the following list of items, depending on the purpose of the bibliography:

• Describe the content (focus) of the sourcedescribe the usefulness of the source
• Evaluate the reliability of the source
• Discuss any conclusions the author(s) may have made
• Note key points from the article relevant to your final project
• Describe your reaction to the source

What does an annotated bibliography look like?

The following in an example source from an annotated bibliography:

Waite, L. J., Goldschneider, F. K., & Witsberger, C. (1986). Nonfamily living and the erosion of traditional family orientations among young adults. American Sociological Review, 51 (4), 541-554.

The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their belief in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. In contrast, an earlier study by Williams cited below shows no significant gender differences in sex role attitudes as a result of nonfamily living.

Track your experience of positive and negative emotions over 4 days this week.

Assignment 1: LASA 2—Substance Abuse Assessments Across the Lifespan

Substance abuse assessments have very different purposes for different populations. For instance, an assessment for treatment of victims will look different from a court-mandated assessment relating to criminal behavior. For another example, an assessment for an adolescent would likely emphasize peer influence more so than it would for an adult. These demographic factors significantly influence the assessment as it relates to treatment planning or other recommendations.

Use the module readings and the Argosy University online library resources to research types of substance abuse assessments for different demographics.

Select three substance abuse assessments for use in this assignment. Your choices should represent three different age populations such as the elderly, adults, adolescents, or children.

Complete the following:

1. Describe the ASAM patient placement criteria for the treatment of substance-related disorders.
2. Describe the three selected types of substance abuse assessments that you might use. Be sure that your choices represent three different age populations such as the elderly, adults, adolescents, or children.
3. Compare and contrast the information being collected in each of the three assessments and describe the areas of concern. Ask, for example, does it include client presentation and functioning, current use and history, high-risk behavior, first exposure, consequences of addiction, culture, life skills, work, vocation, education, health, recreation, or spirituality? Present the comparison of the four types of substance abuse assessments in a table.
4. Explain special considerations, including ethical issues, which would apply to the different populations selected.
5. Evaluate the importance of having assessment tools for clients in each developmental life stage.

Create an 8–10 slide PowerPoint presentation to present your findings to other substance abuse counselors. Include the table comparing the three types of substance abuse assessments. Apply APA standards to citation of sources in your slides. Use the speaker notes in the slide show to further discuss the topics on each slide. In addition, make sure you have a title slide and a slide with references (in APA format).
